Do 3 Random Acts of Kindness

You have the ability to make someone happy. You don’t have to do anything fancy or expensive. It’s easy to forget how easy it is. Simple acts of kindness, like the ones below, make people happy. That happiness spreads out like a ripple in a pond, as a person touched by your kindness may do something kind for another person, and on and on. If we got a big enough ripple going, we would all be doing things to make each other happy every day. It wouldn't solve every problem but it sure would make life better.

Examples:

  • During quarantine, I randomly texted a friend to tell her I love her and I miss her.

  • Two of my friends always buy me drinks at the cafe whenever they get something, without me asking. I tell them they don’t have to but they still do it at anyway. They buy me my go-to drink that I love so much, iced chai latte.

  • My mom hurt her back so I volunteered to do the vacuuming and laundry so she wouldn’t have to bend over

  • I put a note in my friend’s backpack telling them something I appreciate about them

Getting Started: Take a look at the examples above, and try googling random acts of kindness. This should give you a million possibilities, and feel free to create one not on any list. It could be as simple as giving someone a compliment, making a cup of tea for a teacher or parent, leaving a sticky note with a nice message on someone’s computer or backpack, donating used books to the library, bringing a treat to share with friends, letting someone go in front of you in line, or leaving an extra generous tip somewhere. The list goes on and on!

To start this practice, try to do 3 random acts of kindness today. For an extra challenge, see if you can commit to doing at least one act every day for a week after today. Maybe even keep a journal about it, describing what you did, and how it made you feel. The secret to this is that in doing a kindness for another person, not only do they become happier, but you become happier as well. The ripple of happiness has already touched you, and will go on to make others happier too. When you think about it, why isn’t everyone doing this all the time?!
